Design Trends and Tips to Restyle Your Home

Design Trends Tips to Restyle HomeWhether you’re hoping to fall in love with your home again or need to update before listing it for sale, learn what the pros are saying. The latest home design and color trends will bring a refreshing new feel to your home without going through a remodel.

This year’s color trends include a tendency towards tinted grays, with subtle undertones of greens and blues. From olives to teals, to saturated emeralds to ocean warm blues. Whichever shades you choose, think fresh, modern, crisp, and elegant when considering the possibilities.

Incorporate metals like; brass, bronze, and gold, and choice materials like, leather, chevron styled textiles, and the not so traditional tiles.

Outdoor living spaces are becoming more entertaining friendly, in leu of a traditional back yard.

Re-Fresh With the Latest Color Trends

  • Simply painting your front door or even your garage doors can make a bold difference to your home’s curb appeal.
  • Use saturated hues like blues and greens to create a spa-like sanctuary in your bathroom. Doesn’t that sound wonderful?
  • The kitchen, the heart of the home, could always use a change in color. Use a bright yet warm green shade or go bold and daring with the many grays that are grabbing the attention of interior designers.
  • Paint your bedroom with colors that remind you of your favorite place. Get inspiration from your surroundings and incorporate them into your style. Hilton Head Island can be such a great source for this, with the natural colors already the trend.

Here are a few beach inspired bedroom ideas for some inspiration!

Re-Style With the Latest Design and Interior Trends

Restyling your home can seem challenging if you don’t know where to begin or what to focus on. Keep it simple and stylish with these tips:

  • Focus on furniture knobs, kitchen cabinet hardware, faucets, shower heads and fixtures in your bathrooms. Replace them by selecting from the yellow metals, like brass, bronze, and golds, but with a soft finish.
  • And lastly, Tile. Yes. Tile. It’s not the traditional heavy, unwilling, material anymore. Adam Weintraub of Koko Architecture explains, “New technologies are allowing tiles to be more versatile–they’re thinner so they’re easier to hang, less expensive, and, well, cooler.” Tile is finding its way into bedrooms, living rooms and other areas of the home.

Re-Create With the Latest Outdoor Home Improvement Trends

  • Draw the attention of any onlooker to an updated garden with bright, vibrant colors added to your landscape.
  • A distinct, bold door knocker can make a statement all on its own.

Hilton Head Island’s natural beauty and moderate temperatures allow residents to spend most their time outdoors. Because of this, families are opting for more trendy outdoor spaces in leu of the traditional backyard. Indoor porches, modern patios, and/or purposeful yet stylish decks not only add value to your home, but make entertaining and living extra enjoyable!

In-Law Suite Must Haves: Tips for Adding One to Your Home

In law SuiteAs your family members start to grow older, it becomes a necessity to think about what the future holds for them. You may find yourself asking questions like:

  • Will I be able to take care of them?
  • Will I have to put them in a nursing home?
  • Will there be others available to help with all of their needs?
  • Will I be able to remain close to them?
  • Is it possible to have them live with me?
  • And the list goes on…

An increasingly popular option for families is to create an in-law suite, which most often times means converting a room in your home, such as a basement or garage, into a livable space, or building an addition onto your home.

Before you go ahead and start a renovation, keep these tips in mind to create the perfect in-law suite:

1. Be certain it’s legal – Making changes to your home may require a permit, especially if your in-law suite will be an addition to your home. Contact your local zoning board to make sure the project you have in mind complies with any laws and requirements.

2. Provide privacy – While everyone may be looking forward to having each other around, don’t overlook the importance of your relatives privacy. They should be able to feel like the new space is their own and expect all that comes with their continued independent living.

  • Provide a separate entrance
  • Provide its own full bathroom
  • If possible, provide its own full kitchen (again, remember to check with your local zoning board about this)

3. Provide safety features – Your relatives will appreciate the efforts you make to ensure their safety as they continue to age. When creating your in-law suite, keep these safety features in mind:

  • Provide first-floor living if possible
  • Remember a ramp if they are in a wheelchair
  • Fire, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are a must
  • Provide motion activated exterior lights
  • Install an intercom system to make it easy for them to reach you when everyone’s at home
  • Install railings and other support features throughout the space

It can be difficult to watch as your relatives start to get older, but an in-law suite could be the answer to the start of their transition.

Do you have any tips for building an in-law suite?

Budget Friendly Decorating Tips for High-End Style

Whether you’re making some updates to re-energize the look and feel of the spaces in your home, or you’re preparing to put your house up for sale, there are ways of achieving a high-end style while keeping your budget intact.

Decorating and having rooms that you can enjoy and be proud of should be fun, not stressful.  With these budget friendly decorating tips for high-end style, you’ll be well on your way to giving each room that ‘wow’ factor.

Take Painting to the Next Level

While a new coat of paint will refresh the look of any space, go a step further and get creative.  Decorative painting, like vertical stripes in different hues of the same color family or a horizontal two-tone pattern can completely update the look.  Give the look of dimension to your walls with the use of textured paint rollers, or try your hand with a fabric roller.

In most cases, your local paint store will have examples and will even give you a quick lesson on achieving the look you’re going for.

Give Your Furniture a Makeover

Don’t think you have to replace your furniture to change and update your space.  Slip covers can be the answer!  Start by browsing through design magazines or visiting a high-end furniture store for inspiration.  Once you have a few ideas, head to your local department store and look at what they have to offer.  This is a super budget-friendly way of making over a room!

Attention to Accessories

Again, a great place to start when updating the accessories in your space is to browse a few design magazines, look online, or visit a furniture store to see how their stagers have set up a mock living room or bedroom.

You don’t have to change out every accessory you have in a room, just a few perfectly placed accents will do the trick!  Choose items that stand out from the primary color scheme of the space, like vases, a collection of frames, or even an accent chair.
