Hilton Head’s Tourism Takes Flight With Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport

Hilton Head Airport Blog PhotoNestled on the border of Georgia and South Carolina lies one of the biggest influences in Hilton Head Island‘s tourism, Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. What started off as a simple landing field 96 years ago, has now become one of the primary places tourists begin their vacations in the southern east coast.

It has made many transformations over its lifetime. Known as “Chatham Field” and later “Travis Field,”  it even lent itself to the U.S. Army Air Corps. In WWII, the airport was used as a bomber and crew training base for B-24’s and fighter aircraft. In 1983, the airport began servicing overseas flights and became an International Airport. In 2007 a big expansion allowed for larger airlines and as a result, boosted the number of travelers using it.

Recently the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport welcomed Jet Blue as its newest airline. “There was a great partnership that went into the effort to get JetBlue to come into our region,” airport executive director Greg Kelly told the group. “And one of our biggest partners was Hilton Head Island, which – along with Bluffton and the rest of the Lowcountry – accounts for almost 50 percent of the traffic that comes through our airport. We are truly a regional airport.”Source: http://bit.ly/OGVg1l

A large amount of Hilton Head’s business is related directly to the travel industry, making the airport a great asset both socially and economically. Tourists often look into the travel time it takes to get from the airport to their destination when booking a vacation. Hilton Head and Savannah are both within 45 minutes from the airport, making it a great airport to fly into. If destinations are easier to get to, then they  will be visited more often.

In addition to the convenience for tourists, there is also the ease of business traveling for companies. Cities located near airports create investment opportunities for corporations. Jobs both in the travel industry, and airport are another key benefit. All of these are great reasons why the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport has made a positive impact in our region.  We look forward to more airlines joining, new transformations and keeping tourism convenient and accessible for all.
