Hilton Head Island Elementary Aims to Improve Student Health

The students and staff of Hilton Head Island Elementary school feel fortunate to be part of a school system that takes actions to improve the health of all who go there.

Recently, Hilton Head Elementary principal, Jill McAden, announced the addition of a new walking trail near both the elementary and high school, that will be used by students and staff, during physical education classes and after-school clubs.

McAden said in a news release, “We have an avid walking club that meets every morning during the school year and until now has walked on grass around the school.”

Not only is this trail welcomed by everyone, it could serve another purpose. A 15 year old sophomore at the Hilton Head Island High School is hoping to earn the highest rank of the Boy Scouts of America – the Eagle Scout rank – because of the work he’s done on the walking trail.

The addition of the trail was a result of Hilton Head Elementary having earned a $1000 grant for being recognized as a school “with programs that boost students’ health, safety, support, level of challenge and engagement.” [from the Island Packet]. You can learn more about the grant by reading the original article.

It’s important to me as someone who helps people move into the Hilton Head Island area that we have schools focused on improving the lives of both the children and staff. If your moving to the area with school-aged children, you can feel good about their education!
