What Buyers Want in Home Design: 2013 Trends

Home Trends 2013Getting the best price for your home when you have it listed for sale is always the main goal right? In order to make that happen, today’s home sellers need to be aware of what buyers actually want when it comes to home design.

Today’s blog post provides an overview of what the design pros are saying will be emerging trends in 2013.

Colors
Neutral color schemes are still the best choice when preparing your home for sale, however buyers are looking for the “new-neutral”. Opt for blue-gray’s and muted yellow’s instead of beige, white, or cream colors. For accent walls and accessories, design pros are seeing a trend toward orange and purple.

Outdoors
Since more and more families are conscience of their budget, having a vegetable garden is a huge bonus for buyers. Outdoor kitchens are also looked at with added interest, if simply to allow families to do more cooking at home all year round and take advantage of the climate, especially here in Hilton Head Island.

Indoors

  • Buyers are looking for things like media rooms with comfortable seating, good lighting, and tables.
  • Double-duty furnishings are gaining in popularity. For example, ottomans that can double as storage and seating, sofa-beds, and coffee tables that can be used for dining provide those extra features. While that furniture is most times not sold with the house, buyers are able to picture themselves living in a home that has these features.
  • Eco-friendly appliances and other features will continue to rise in popularity.

Take a look at the original article for even more home trends for 2013.

What home improvements do you want to make this year? Are they for your living needs or to prepare your home for sale?

How to Keep Leather Furniture Looking Like New; A Maintenance Guide

Leather furniture has long been a favorite of home owners and can be kept looking its best with a little knowledge of the right (and wrong) things to do. Since leather typically lasts four times longer than fabric, it’s a perfect furniture choice no matter what type of family you have.

Leather Furniture Maintenance

Benefits of Leather

  • Recommended for allergy sufferers because fabric harbors dust mites.
  • Leather is comfortable and soothing.
  • Has a strength that cannot be matched with other fabrics.
  • Leather absorbs and releases moisture through fibers and pores.
  • Will actually get more comfortable over time.
  • Leather is a classic look in just about any home and with any decor.

Budget Friendly Decorating Tips for High-End Style

Maintenance of Leather

  • Do not use soap or heavily soak stains with water, as this could cause more damage than the actual stain.
  • Wipe leather furniture down with a sponge barely dampened with distilled water (not tap water) a few times a year. Then moisturize the furniture with a conditioner made for your particular type of leather.
  • Never put leather furniture where the sunlight will hit it directly, as the light will dry it out. This also goes for radiators, fireplaces, or other sources of heat.
  • If you have little ones at home, be sure to keep away buckles and other clothing items that could tear the leather.
  • Take precaution with your pets; animals nails could scratch the leather.
  • Use dry cloths to dust the leather.
  • For oil, grease, or butter stains, use a clean, dry cloth to wipe it off. Do not use water! The spot should start to disappear if left alone.
  • Remove spills as quickly as possible with a clean absorbent cloth or sponge.

Leather furniture will outlast other types of fabric, as long as you do your part to keep it looking its best! Do you have any other tips for maintaining leather furniture?
