It’s an exciting time here in Hilton Head Island for residents who are in favor of the plans to redesign the currently enclosed Mall at Shelter Cove!
The redevelopment plans for the Shelter Cove Mall calls for a Kroger supermarket, new apartments, a waterfront park and drive, and a pedestrian-friendly road that would have a variety of shops, restaurants and on-street parking!
On Tuesday, the Hilton Head Island town panel unanimously endorsed with a vote of 5-0 the proposed drawings that would include a “village” of small, single-story shops and cafes leading to Broad Creek. While final approval isn’t expected until January 2013, board member Deborah Welch said, “I’m very excited to see what’s come out of this…I think it’s an architectural style that works well for the island.”
What’s the timeline look like?
Demolition of the current mall is expected to begin towards the end of this year, and you should see construction on the retail portion starting early 2013. The expected completion date is November 2013. The next step would be to start construction on the apartments that are part of the whole project, not until 2014.
