Hilton Head’s Tourism Takes Flight With Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport

Hilton Head Airport Blog PhotoNestled on the border of Georgia and South Carolina lies one of the biggest influences in Hilton Head Island‘s tourism, Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. What started off as a simple landing field 96 years ago, has now become one of the primary places tourists begin their vacations in the southern east coast.

It has made many transformations over its lifetime. Known as “Chatham Field” and later “Travis Field,”  it even lent itself to the U.S. Army Air Corps. In WWII, the airport was used as a bomber and crew training base for B-24’s and fighter aircraft. In 1983, the airport began servicing overseas flights and became an International Airport. In 2007 a big expansion allowed for larger airlines and as a result, boosted the number of travelers using it.

Recently the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport welcomed Jet Blue as its newest airline. “There was a great partnership that went into the effort to get JetBlue to come into our region,” airport executive director Greg Kelly told the group. “And one of our biggest partners was Hilton Head Island, which – along with Bluffton and the rest of the Lowcountry – accounts for almost 50 percent of the traffic that comes through our airport. A large amount of Hilton Head’s business is related directly to the travel industry, making the airport a great asset both socially and economically. Tourists often look into the travel time it takes to get from the airport to their destination when booking a vacation. Hilton Head and Savannah are both within 45 minutes from the airport, making it a great airport to fly into. If destinations are easier to get to, then they  will be visited more often.

In addition to the convenience for tourists, there is also the ease of business traveling for companies. Cities located near airports create investment opportunities for corporations. Jobs both in the travel industry, and airport are another key benefit. All of these are great reasons why the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport has made a positive impact in our region.  We look forward to more airlines joining, new transformations and keeping tourism convenient and accessible for all.

Upcoming Events on Hilton Head Island

The annual Cooks & Books event consists of signature food from the top restaurants in the local area and with local well-known authors. There is a fee for admission but it includes unlimited tastings, access to the authors, an opportunity to vote for your favorite tasting, and the chef’s competition. There will also be a silent auction and more!

The annual Hilton Head Wine and Food Festival! This event happens the first weekend of March and is an entire week long! The event is located at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. There is an admission fee $39.99 for advance purchase and $50 at the gate. Visit their website for more information and for tickets.

The Hilton Head Area Home Builders Association presents the Home & Garden Show which features over 80+ Home and Garden Exhibits, a Kids’ Zone Workshop/Play area, Parade of Homes Tour, Giveaways, and MORE! These events are great to attend as you can get a lot of information for your home. This event is held at the Bluffton Recreation Complex in March.

Another great event for those of you who love seafood is the annual Hilton Head Island Seafood Fest at Shelter Cove Park. This event benefits the American Cancer Society, M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Center, and the Island Recreation Scholarship Fund! Local restaurants will be serving their seafood specialties and there will be live entertainment!

All of these events happen before the summer months and heat hit our area and make for the perfect reason to schedule your visit to Hilton Head!

18th Annual Gullah Celebration on Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration 2014Both visitors and residents of Hilton Head Island look forward to so many annual events, but the Gullah Celebration is by far one of the best! In fact, it has been recognized by the Southeast Tourism Society as one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast!

The Gullah Celebration showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Gullah people and their history on Hilton Head Island.

What is the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration?

During the month of February, you will have the opportunity to experience the food and music, receive firsthand historical information, and take a journey through the culture via the visual arts.

The Taste of Gullah, sponsored in part by the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina offers classic Gullah favorites and cultural entertainment. The Arts, Crafts and Food Expo offers cultural demonstrations, including sweet grass baskets sewing, and fishnet weaving.

Vendors participate in this event selling authentic Gullah and African crafts as well as an offering of all traditional Gullah foods. Entertainment includes storytellers, African dance and Gospel music. Gospel concerts feature gospel music, Negro spirituals and highlight the history of music as it developed among the Gullah people.

What Can You Still Look Forward to for 2014?

Does a night of entertainment and dancing sound like a fun way to spend your Valentine’s Day evening? Head to Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort, located at 40 Folly Field Road, for VALENTINE’S DAY LIVE with DEAS GUYZ, a show you don’t want to miss! Your $30 per person entitles you to a buffet, dancing, a silent auction, and more! A cash bar will also be available.

The weekend of February 15-16 brings you the Arts, Craft & Food Expo, located at the Coastal Discovery Museum (70 Honey Horn Drive). This two-day event offers cultural demonstration’s such as quilt and jewelry making, Gullah and African crafts, traditional Gullah foods, and musical entertainment. The cost is $5 per person, and beer and wine tickets can be purchased at the event.

The Traditional Gullah Praise Concert is on February 21 at 7pm at St. James Baptist Church, located at 209 Dillon Rd. This concert is to celebrate and honor the spiritual thread that binds the African ancestors and the Gullah of today.
